SEEMA

SEEMA is affiliated with MUHSEN. SEEMA stands for Support Embrace Empower Mental Health Advocacy.

The organization provides support groups for those with mental health issue and social activities to help those who feel ashamed for having any mental health diagnoses.

Their services include advocating for trained psychiatrist staff at Islamic schools, providing open discussions led by trained professionals, and supporting families and those suffering with mental health. There is a Chicago chapter which holds events like art therapy or support groups.

They are strong promoters of fighting the stigma that is usually apparent in Muslim communities towards those with health issues. They recommend people:

  • Talk openly
  • Educate yourself and others
  • Be conscious of language
  • Show compassion
  • Don’t have self-blame/self-stigmatization
